Katherine Richardson is a professor in biological oceanography at the University of Copenhagen and leader of the Sustainability Science Centre. She was Chairperson of the Commission on Climate Change Policy, which presented the roadmap for how Denmark can become independent of fossil fuels. She is currently a member of the Danish Climate Council. Her research focuses on the importance of biological processes in the ocean for the uptake of CO2 from the atmosphere and how ocean biology contributes to Earth system functioning. Katherine was Chairman of the Scientific Steering Committee for the IARU congress, Global Challenges: Achieving Sustainability.
