Envisioning a positive future is a fundamental prerequisite for getting there. The Great Transition Initiative is a large and growing international network that has been creating and analyzing alternative future scenarios for decades. They now have a fantastic website that lays out these alternative futures and describes their characteristics in enough detail for everyone to understand and evaluate. One of the more compelling new features is the “futures in motion” section that allows one to see how four main scenarios (Fortress World, Market Forces, Policy Reform, and the Great Transition) evolve from now until 2100 using 39 different indicators (including water use, CO2 emissions, GDP/capita, and overall quality of life) for 11 different world regions. The graphics are fantastic and the choices are obvious. This site will do much to help us make the Great Transition.
