Solutions is starting a new life in 2018. After having originated in the United States and then moved to Australia, our journal has now decided to give more space to a variety of voices from both the Global North and the Global South. We have thus created two editorial teams. One based at the University of Pretoria in South Africa and led by me as the new Editor-in-Chief and one based at Regis University in the USA, led by my colleague Elizabeth Caniglia (see photo below). Of course, the two founding editors, Robert Costanza and Ida Kubiszewski will continue being involved in the management of the journal and so will our outstanding editorial board.
What are the major changes underway? First of all, we have decided to become an online-only publication. Why? Mostly to decrease our ecological footprint. Indeed, printing copies and shipping them around the world has become unsustainable. Secondly, we want to reduce costs and invest more in the restructuring and management of the website. Finally, because we want to turn Solutions into a multimedia brand, giving more space to videos, podcasts and other new forms of communication.
Our submission policy will not change. Please keep sending us your ideas for full-length scientific contributions (which we call Features) and for shorter opinion pieces (that is, Perspectives in our jargon). We also invite contributors to send us reviews of books, films and other media that we are always very happy to publish.
We want Solutions to become an even larger family, especially in regions of the world that have thus far been less involved in the journal. In particular, we would like to encourage partnerships with individual and institutions in Africa, Asia and South America.
Solutions can be even more successful if it becomes more than a publication. It needs to grow into a movement for change. The world desperately needs it. And we want to try our best to make it happen.
