With revenue from video games set to overtake the film industry this year, socially-minded programmers have started taking advantage of the format’s ability to reach younger generations. Games for Change hosts an annual conference in New York that aims to bring together the emerging world of progressive techies. Games showcased at recent conferences include Against All Odds, which highlights the global refugee experience from the time people are forced to leave their countries of origin to the beginning of their new lives abroad, to Ayiti, in which players must manage a rural family of five in Haiti over four years and keep them healthy, get them educated, and help them survive. The latter game was played over a half million times in the six months following its launch in 2006.
